BA2 Reflective Journal - Week 2

I am set on the idea that i want to base my gargoyle design on a dragon. I think they are fascinating and make a great gargoyle. I am leaning towards the European style of dragon oppose to the Chinese style of dragon.

Also, i'll somehow want to integrate the Steampunk style in to my design. But i am still wondering if it is plausible to integrate that style into my design without crowding and wrecking my design. But i will defiantly try to do research on this however, to explore if it actually possible.

Research, research, research!

As always, i start my research with mood boards.

My first mood board i looked at different architecture, as i want an idea where my gargoyle is going to be placed. And obviously the architecture is going to effect how the gargoyle is going to look like.

These next two mood boards are of gargoyles, one is a general look at gargoyles and the other looking at a particular style (gothic) of gargoyles. I really want to integrate the gothic style into my own design.

DRAGONS! I love dragons, and i really want to integrate them into my design. Though the idea of doing dragons is possible considered generic. Regardless, i think they are very interesting given and make a good looking gargoyle. I looked at what would be considered dragon anatomy and concept art of dragons. Also, some screen shots from Dragon Age.
In addition to my dragon mood board research, I've also looked through some of my old dragon books ('Working with Draogons' and 'The complete Book of Dragonology') that i had as a child.

Meaning it's impossible to get an actual real world reference to a dragon, i looked at lizards as a real world reference. I've also looked at lizard scales for texture reference and dinosaur anatomy as some form of reference.

H.R. Giger
I looked at H.R. Giger for artistic research. Though the Xenomorph isn't a dragon, it is however very reptile like. I also wanted to look at H.R. Giger for the style of his work. Not for the sci-fi style but the really creepy and dark styling of his work.

I've also done a mood board in regarding on how other's approach creating reptile looking things using Zbrush

I've done a mood board on wing anatomy from birds and bats, just to get reference for my dragon gargoyle's wings.

This mood board may be slightly random next to the other mood boards. However, I haven't gone mad. I am planning to add a base onto my gargoyle sculpt, to which I want to add a Victorian style pattern onto it. Also considering putting a Victorian style patter on the gargoyle itself, not sure if it'll work, but I am going to experiment on it.

BA2 Reflective Journal - Week One

I am quite ecstatic about the project we've been given for BA2. I love the look of gargoyle (especially the decrepit ones) and my head is filling with ideas with how i want my gargoyle asset to look.

I will admit however, i am slightly fazed at the idea of topology and using Zbrush for the first time. I have never set into the realm of digital 3D modeling before. But i am always eager to learn new things.

BA 2: 3D concept art

New term, new project.

For this project, we are focusing on the 3D side of concept art for games. I have never done 3D modeling before, in digital means anyway, so this is all new to me and i am quite looking forward to using Zbrush.

The Brief:

To create a game ready asset. In this case a gargoyle.

Suitable for use on the current gen console (PS4, PC Xbox One).

The asset gargoyle must be a non-articulated statue, thus not animated.

Must have efficient topology and textured

50,000 poly limit

The gargoyle MUST have a spout situated somewhere within it. This is what makes a gargoyle different to a grotesque.
