Lighting and tone

Today, I decided to create some mood boards in the hopes that this will help me get somewhat clear idea what I want to do for both SNU and ASU2.

My thoughts on the lighting mood board: I wanted to get better with lighting to help emphasize the assets I create. So I went to photography. When I look at photography, my eye is usually drawn to photos with strong dynamic and contrasting lighting. Looking at these, I hope to recreate these within this project (or at least try). Using this lighting will help with the tone I want to convey.
I may try and pick apart the lighting tomorrow or next week to help my understanding in recreating the lighting effects.

(Note: Also created Pinterest boards on lighting and extra images on tone: My Pinterest Board on Lighting)

ASU2 and SNU: The beginning

ASU2 and SNU: The beginning

For both SNU and ASU1, I wanted to continue with asset creation and build some sort of environment pieces
To get better at understanding in building environments, I want to look at real life applications of constructing environments such as buildings. So, for this I am going to look at architecture and architecture principles.
The reason why I am looking at architecture and principles, is that they look at constructing and designing buildings for the real word. They look at aesthetics, the building serves their functions, plausible and fail (collapse)

I believe look at architecture and it’s principles will aid me in not only understanding environments, designing them and creating them but will also help me getting into the games industry as a environment artist – as some job listings I looked at, it’s a plus to have some knowledge on architecture.

I’m not entirely sure what I want to do yet for both projects, but I’m hoping to create an environment piece.

Where I looked for job listings for 3D environment artists:

I looked at skills what an environment artist needs for the industry. I looked at these so I know what to aim for and remind myself what I need

Though both SNU and ASU2 are separate units with separate hand ins, I am hoping to use these units as complementary units. Hopefully this will help my time management for them and encourage me more to work on the units simultaneously instead of working on the two separately and end up working on one more and neglecting the other.
I'm also going to treat these units as pre-production for my final masters unit for my MA.

Aims for next week:

  • Write learning agreement for ASU2 and SNU
  • Decide what I want to do for each unit
  • Begin research into architecture
  • Get some sketching done (some of the listing of the enviroment artist jobs want people with some drawing skills, so this will be a response to that. Also I want to get my 2D traditional drawing skills up to snuff again after neglecting it for so long)
  • Research (Once I figured out what I want to do)
  • Mood boards
  • Weekly planner to help my time management and to help me motivate me

I also done some mind maps on what skills I need and what skills a enviroment artist needs
