Synopsis
The Tinderbox is a short story about a solider, whom was returning home from a war. Upon his journey home, he met a 'frightful-looking' witch. This witch asked the solider for a favor; which entails him to climb down an old tree and to get money from within. But within said tree are three dogs - each dog was bigger than the last. All were protecting chests containing coins: the first dog protects a chest filled with copper, the second protects a chest of silver and the last protects a chest filled with gold. The witch gave him an apron, to which the solider must spread upon the floor, which then one of the dogs will sit upon. Thus allowing the solider to collect he coin.
For all of this, the only thing the witch ask in return, is that the solider retrieve a tinderbox from within the tree. Upon the completion of this favor, carrying as much gold as possible, instead giving the tinderbox to the witch, the solider instead kills the witch. Thinking that the tinderbox must be special and of some importance for the witch to ask him to retrieve it for her.
From the coin he gained, he spent it on a luxurious life style, and he also gave some of the coin to the poor. But when the money was almost gone, the solider realize the tinderbox summons dogs from the tree. When ever the solider summons the dogs, the must obey the task he sets them. Like retrieving more coin from the tree.
One such task was to bring a princess to him, a princess whom no one ever saw, as she was looked away. After one night the King and Queen (the princess' parents) became suspicious of this and found out whom was the cause of this. Which ultimately lead to the solider arrest and was to be executed.
The night before the solider's execution, he bribed a boy to retrieve his tinderbox. The boy did so, and the solider used the tinderbox to summon the dogs to help him escape and to kill the King and Queen. The solider then becomes the king and marries the princess.
For my take of the Tinder-Box, instead
of having a male solider, I am instead going to have a female
aviation pilot. To begin with she's a poor, down on her luck gal, with a boring life and a dead end job. To escape this dull, mundane life, she use to dream of a life of flight and
adventure! One day after a detour to a grimy bar, having a drink or two to
take blues away. An old gypsy approached her and ask for a favor, to retrieve an
quite intriguing compass from an old tree. In return the gal will
gain the means to attain her dreams of flying and adventure. She did
what the gypsy ask, and with all the gold she could carry to fund her
dream. However, instead of giving the compass back to the gypsy she instead stole it. As the compass shows direction to the holders goals and
grants them luck. With the gold the gal attains, she buys a state of
the art fighter plane to which enables her to have her life of
adventure, flying where no man, nor woman have flown before. To which she meets new
interesting people (to say the least) and encounter things and places that people would
never thought possible.
